: Germany through KFW is supporting North Macedonia in its efforts to reconstruct its student dormitories in order to provide better living conditions for the students and to further boost energy savings.
The aim, beyond energy efficient refurbishment, is to also intervene in the eventual structural issues of the buildings so their lifetime is prolonged and as well, to improve the comfort level for the students.
The current rough estimate is that in average the student dormitories in North Macedonia are consuming 290kWh.m2/year (average 2015-2018). After project completion of all measures the student dormitories should reduce their energy consumption by min 30% and/or ideally reach 150kWh/m2/year under the same occupation and utilisation circumstances in comparison to the reference year. This would account for approximately 2400 t CO2/year savings.
During the investment stage, minimum technical standards shall be specified for all constructions. These standards will take into account norms and requirements of North Macedonia, best practice and EU standards and shall ensure a high quality and energy efficiency of the rehabilitated buildings.
This Programme is also supported by the European Union Western Balkan Investment Framework (WBIF) REEP Plus with a grant of ?4.75 million administered by KfW, funds which will be mainly used for implementation measures.
